Debra Carroll-Beight (she/her/hers) is currently a Ph.D. student in bioethics at Case Western Reserve University. She holds an MA in bioethics from the Ohio State University (2021) and an MSc in Public Health from Sweden's Lund University (2017). She received her BA, also from Ohio State, double majoring in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Communication Analysis (2015).
Her research interests include inequities in sexual and reproductive health care that exist in LGBTQ+ communities, particularly among intersex, transgender, and gender-expansive persons; mental health services for transgender and gender-expansive persons; access to gender-affirming care for transgender migrants and refugees in Sweden; and the medical management of intersex infants and children.
Debra has presented her work on intersex and transgender reproduction options at the European Professional Association for Transgender Health (EPATH) conferences in 2023, 2021, and 2019 and at UTMB's Reproductive Ethics Conference in 2023. She has discussed the ethical intersections between transgender and intersex populations in a webinar for Trans Matters Worldwide, a UK transgender support organization. Her publications have addressed topics such as mental health and transgender adults in Sweden, cisgender perceptions of transgender representations in movies, and socio-legal analyses of the impact of intersex normalizing surgeries.
Debra is passionate about addressing health disparities and advocating for marginalized communities. She is committed to integrating comprehensive and informed perspectives into healthcare research and practice, aiming to promote understanding and equity within our health systems.
