Bone Marrow Transplantation from Minor to Parent: An Ethical Analysis of Conflict of Interest
Thursday, October 12, 2023
4:00 PM – 5:15 PM ET
Location: Essex AB (Fourth Floor)
The literature surrounding sibling-to-sibling bone marrow transplantation has greatly impacted our media, hospital organizations and research endeavours. However, the potential of a minor to donate to their parent requiring transplantation is seldom discussed. This presentation discusses the ethical considerations associated with this type of donation. Using the American Association of Pediatrics’ 5 Criteria for Ethical Bone Marrow Donation as a guideline, this presentation will assess which criteria can be implemented in minor to parent bone marrow transplantations. Conflict of interest remains a high ethical concern, especially when a vulnerable population is involved. As the parent, who provides consent for a child to donate, is the patient, new ethical considerations and safeguards must be put into place. This conflict of interest will be considered as family dynamics, external influences, and coercion may be present. This presentation will examine and discuss potential ways to reduce the conflict of interest within this donation type, by use of two ethics committees, a guardian, or a representative.
