Medical Student
Stanford University School of Medicine
Stanford, California
Brian Smith, MS (he/him/his) is a third (out of six) year medical student at Stanford, concentrating in Biomedical Ethics and the Medical Humanities. In medical school, Brian has explored the medical humanities broadly, using creativity and storytelling to reflect on medical training. He is the author of more than 45 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals such as JAMA Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Anesthesiology.
Outside of academia, Brian loves sharing the transformative power of narrative in medicine. He believes that stories not only humanize the clinical experience, but also provide invaluable insights that can shape more compassionate and holistic patient care. He finds so much joy in running virtual writing workshops for patients and caregivers, and making personalized artwork at the hospital bedside.
It takes courage to press on emotional bruises, to confront raw or buried griefs. Brian is profoundly grateful to the participants for doing both. His life is storytelling and medicine, and every participant he works with teaches him so much about both. What a gift to future patients. Through storytelling, comes the art of listening.
