Cynthia McCarthy, DHCE, MA, NREMT, Visiting Associate Professor, University of Pittsburgh, School of Public Health, is a Bioethicist, specializing in Health Care Ethics. She is the Director of the undergraduate Bioethics Certificate in the School of Public Health. She has been teaching Bioethics to pre-health care professionals/pre-med professionals since 1999, and has been a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh since 2009. She specializes in topics related to direct patient/client interactions, research ethics and organ donation. McCarthy’s consulting work over the course of the last 20 plus years has focused on ethics education of health care professionals, behavioral health accreditation, ethics committee work, and National Institute of Health Data and Safety Monitoring Boards. She is an ethics consultant to the University of Pittsburgh’s Institutional Review Board and the Ethics Facilitator for the University of Pittsburgh's Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She is a faculty fellow in the Frederick Honors College, coach/advisor for the University of Pittsburgh's Bioethics Bowl Club, and author/advisor for Ethics in Action, an outside the classroom, educational initiative focused on health-related ethical issues and the development of transferable skills for students.
