Patricia Luck (she/her), MBChB, MPhil PallMed, MSc MedHum is Assistant Professor of Health Humanities & Bioethics, Program Director of the Masters of Science in Medical Humanities and Division Director of Health Humanities for Undergraduate Medical Education in the Department of Health Humanities & Bioethics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She teaches both masters and medical students, and facilitates faculty trainings.
Dr Luck’s broad background and experience in family medicine, palliative care, mindfulness, and the health humanities, supports her interests in understanding the sociocultural contextual aspects of clinical practice, the conditions for establishing trusting relationships, and the clinical experience of human suffering from a perspective of equity, inclusion, and cultural humility. Her current scholarship is focused on what influences shame, presence and empathy in the clinical encounter and the potential of supportive and mitigating interventions offered through the tools and methodologies of mindfulness and the health humanities. In collaboration with colleagues, and utilising a variety of interdisciplinary approaches, she developed and is researching health humanities and mindfulness reflection tools such as the Photo/Tiny Story and Mindful Art Pause, both applicable to health care education and the clinical environment.
