Denise M. Dudzinski, PHD, HEC-C (she/her/hers)

Dr. Dudzinski is Professor (Joint) in Bioethics & Humanities and Pediatrics, Division of Bioethics & Palliative Care as well as Fellow of the Hastings Center. She was Chair of the Department of Bioethics & Humanities from 2014-2022. She is Adjunct Professor in the School of Law and in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington. She is Chief of the UW Medicine Ethics Consultation Service and Director of Organizational Ethics at Seattle Children's Hospital.

She was a member of the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities Board of Directors and has served on two task forces to update the Core Competencies in Healthcare Ethics Consultation. She serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Bioethics and Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics. She directs the department's Advanced Training in Healthcare Ethics program and has directed the annual Summer Seminar in Health Care Ethics for over fifteen years. She was Associate Editor for the American Journal of Bioethics from 2019-2022.

Her articles often pertain to clinical and organizational ethics and have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Pediatrics, Hastings Center Report, Theoretical Medicine & Bioethics, the American Journal of Bioethics, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, the Journal of Medical Ethics, and Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Dudzinski co-edited Complex Ethics Consultations: Cases that Haunt Us published by Cambridge University Press. She is currently co-editing a second edition of the book.

Her research includes methods and practices in ethics consultation; clinical and organizational ethics; pandemic ethics; ethical issues in transplantation and mechanical circulatory support; large-scale adverse event disclosure; competent refusal of nursing care; moral distress; and ethical issues in end-of-life care.
