Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM) includes many ethical dilemmas and can be related to end-of-life care, periviability, genetic testing, research ethics, and the limits of parental decision-making, among others. NPM fellowship trainees desire to conduct scholarly activity in ethics, but few resources are available for guidance to complete those projects. Meeting NPM fellow needs remains challenging. It is unknown how many NPM fellows desire opportunities for scholarly work in ethics.
A team of 5 Neonatologists and Ethicists spanning training through early career, mid-career, and well-established career added resources to a roadmap template over multiple iterations. A roadmap timeline containing 3-year longitudinal structured suggestions for NPM fellows contained several sections: Conference abstract deadlines and dates; professional development suggestions; mentoring expectations; other resources for professional development. Experts in neonatal bioethics combined resources onto a single document for conversion into an interactive roadmap template.
A targeted literature review revealed little data surrounding guidance for NPM fellow interested in creating ethics-related scholarship during their fellowship training. An interactive roadmap spanning the three years of NPM fellowship training was created from the template produced by the team of Neonatologists and Ethicists that included items on mentorship, grants, launching an ethics project, targets for
Creation of a roadmap of resources specifically designed for NPM fellows wishing to complete a scholarly project related to ethics as part of fellowship requirements fills a current need. Similar roadmaps may be applicable to other pediatric fellowship programs besides NPM.
